I really only update Facebook for events of this magnitude.

Relationship status: Engaged to Elizabeth Gifford

[info]roguesylph and I got engaged yesterday. We were going to spend the day in Newport and then head over to WaterFire in the evening, but she got a flat tire last night, and then there were thunderstorms, so we just had dinner in the city instead.

We'd been planning it for a while. It's not really a decision I wanted to make unilaterally, so that would've made it hard enough for me to have surprised her, and then we decided that we should both have engagement rings (since blah blah something about equality, but the important part is, I like shiny things), so the surprise thing wouldn't really have worked out. I still managed to get somewhat of a drop on her though.

We'd decided that we were going to do it on Saturday (our anniversary is on Monday, but we wanted to do it on a weekend so that we could celebrate in style), so I was going to "pop the question" (which was a pretty slim formality at this point, but hey, it's still, y'know, "the question") at midnight. She decided to go get a glass of water at 23:59, conveniently. I palmed the jewelry box while she was up, and when she got back, after making sure that my water had been securely set down, I told her, "Oh, before you sit down..." Drop to knee, &c. I don't think we particularly managed to surprise any family, or really, any of y'all.

There are pictures of rings and other assorted schmoopiness at images.sachsfam.org (but note that zevils.com and its associated images.zevils.com remain the canonical websites for my personal stuff....) Liz's post is here.

The wedding is tentatively scheduled for Q4 2008, but for the sake of everyone's collective sanity, we're declaring a moratorium on any further planning until mid-September (2007 :p).

I love you, Liz.

Thanks ^_^

And for raising her to be an amazing woman.

(I knew it was meant to be when I found out that she, too, stays through the credits at movies.)

Congratulations! Now, is that an external moratorium, or an internal moratorium? I'd like to hear the odds on how long you guys can keep from talking about it, if not at least thinking about it, until September rolls around. :-)

I don't think I can safely contemplate this question.

Heh. Then here's another for you:

Why are you responding to LiveJournal comments when one would expect you to be "basking in the glow," as it were, with your fiancée?

See, this is why LiveJournal comment timestamps need seconds - so I can see by just how much you beat me. A granularity of one minute just does not suffice!

Actually, don't mind me, I'm just obnoxious (in addition to very surprised (but then I've been out of the loop), but happy for you both). Congratulations again.

That sounds a little like Amanda and I. We both have rings, and there wasn't any real surprising. She got the bit of a drop on me though.

If you want any tips on the planning bits, or suggestions on area reception sites (not sure where you're thinking of having the wedding/reception), I'd be happen to pass on some of my newly gained insights and tools.

Yeah, I've been reading your and Teem's journals and being amused that we were such trend-followers.

We're holding off on planning for a couple of months to let everyone breathe a bit, but it'll be Q4 2008-ish. I'm sure we'll be in touch once we start getting into the thick of things :p

Woweez! This in fantab...not surprised now as Liz's post was later and showed up on my flist before yours- so glad I started reading my flist again! Great rings! Are those going to be both your engagement rings and wedding bands or are you going to get separate wedding bands?

It's amazing you guys almost went to waterfire last night cause that's where I was with my fam, and I remember looking down at the water and watching some gondolas with people in them maneuver around the fire thinking that would be such a romantic way to propose to someone. Psychic?

Next psychic premonition? Engagement celebration. Hint.

Thanks!

We're going to get separate wedding bands.

We'll probably do some sort of something. Sally offered to host a cocktail party, we might take her up on that.
